What is autism?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that primarily affects social communication, social interaction, and flexible adaptation. Autism may involve differences in communication, difficulties understanding social situations and developing relationships, repetitive behaviours, a strong preference for familiar routines, and various sensory differences. The presentation and intensity of these characteristics can vary significantly from child to child.
The term autism spectrum reflects this diversity: no two autistic children are exactly alike. Children may differ in their communication abilities, social skills, cognitive abilities, interests, and the level of support they require. For this reason, both understanding autism and planning appropriate intervention should take into account each child's individual needs, strengths, and abilities.
How can we help?
Intervention for children on the autism spectrum can be most effective when it is based on the child's individual abilities, needs, and strengths. At ABA Kids International, we provide personalised, comprehensive developmental support, with a focus on systematically and purposefully developing the skills children need for everyday life and further learning.
Our program may include ABA-based intervention and early intervention, communication and social skills development, and behavioural support. We also support children in developing independence, functional daily living skills, and the abilities needed for a successful transition to school. Our School Readiness Program supports children's adaptation to the school environment and the development of foundational learning skills.
Depending on the child's individual needs, we also provide TSMT, speech and language therapy, individual intervention, and structured group activities. Our aim is to ensure that different areas of development are coordinated and complement one another in supporting the child's overall development.
ABA-Based Intervention for Autism
ABA-based intervention provides a structured, measurable, and individualised approach to skill development for autistic children. At ABA Kids International, we begin with a detailed assessment to understand each child's current abilities, strengths, areas of difficulty, communication, behaviour, and independence. Based on the assessment, we identify the developmental goals that are most relevant to the child's everyday life and future development.
We then create an individualised intervention plan with specific and measurable teaching goals. Depending on the child's needs, intervention may target communication, social skills, independence, play, and learning skills, while also providing support for challenging behaviours when required.
We continuously document and monitor each child's progress using objective data, allowing the intervention plan to be adjusted when necessary. Parents are active partners throughout the process: we regularly discuss progress and provide practical strategies that can also be used at home to support the child's use of newly acquired skills in everyday situations.
Which areas do we support?
How Do I Know If My Child May Need Support?
Children develop at different rates, and individual differences in development are natural. However, it may be worth consulting a professional if a child experiences persistent difficulties that affect everyday life, learning, or social relationships.
Professional support may be helpful when a child has difficulty expressing what they want or need, or understanding and following requests and instructions. Other signs may include difficulty adapting to change, a strong preference for familiar routines, repetitive movements or activities, or unusual sensitivity or reduced responsiveness to sensory input such as sounds, touch, light, or different textures. Frequent emotional or behavioural episodes and difficulties with age-appropriate independence may also indicate that additional support could be beneficial.
It is important to emphasise that these signs alone do not mean that a child is on the autism spectrum. However, when similar difficulties are observed across several areas of development, it is advisable to consult a professional. Early identification and appropriate support can help children develop according to their individual potential.
How Does Intervention Begin at ABA Kids International?
